Los Angeles is one of those places that looks deceptively easy to explore until you actually arrive.
Between the traffic, sprawling neighborhoods, expensive parking and attractions that don't always live up to the hype, a little planning can make the difference between an unforgettable vacation and a frustrating one.

Here are eight mistakes to avoid when visiting LA.
1. Trying to see the entire city in one day
Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Downtown LA might look close together on a map, but getting between them can take much longer than expected.
Instead of cramming everything into one itinerary, group attractions by area and give yourself time to enjoy each neighborhood without constantly checking the clock.
2. Assuming Hollywood looks like the movies
Hollywood Boulevard has its famous Walk of Fame, the TCL Chinese Theatre and plenty of movie history, but the reality can be much more crowded and commercial than visitors imagine.
It's worth seeing the landmarks, but don't spend your entire LA vacation here expecting every street to look like a glamorous movie set.
3. Underestimating LA traffic
A short distance on Google Maps doesn't necessarily mean a quick journey, particularly during busy commuting hours.
Leave extra time for appointments, tours and dinner reservations, and avoid planning several cross-city trips in the same afternoon if you can help it.
4. Forgetting how big Los Angeles really is
LA isn't a city where every major attraction sits within easy walking distance of the next one.
Research your hotel location before booking and consider how you'll reach the beach, restaurants and attractions you actually want to visit, rather than choosing accommodation on price alone.

5. Expecting every beach day to be hot and sunny
Los Angeles is famous for its sunshine, but coastal weather can be surprisingly cool and cloudy, particularly during late spring and early summer.
Check the forecast for the specific beach you're visiting and bring a light layer if you're planning to stay into the evening.
6. Ignoring public transportation completely
Hiring a car can make exploring many parts of LA easier, but driving everywhere isn't always necessary.
The Metro can be useful for destinations around Hollywood, Downtown and Santa Monica, so check whether transit makes sense for your itinerary before paying for parking and rideshares.
7. Paying for things without checking the price
Tourist-heavy areas can attract expensive souvenirs, paid photo opportunities and attractions that cost more than visitors expect.
Check prices before agreeing to a photo with a costumed character, buying tickets from an unfamiliar seller or committing to an activity that wasn't part of your original plans.
8. Spending the whole trip at famous tourist attractions
The Hollywood Sign and Santa Monica Pier deserve their place on plenty of itineraries, but they aren't the only reasons to visit Los Angeles.
Leave room for neighborhood restaurants, local coffee shops, independent stores and areas beyond the main tourist routes, because some of the most memorable experiences happen when you venture away from the obvious landmarks.
Los Angeles rewards visitors who plan around its size rather than fighting against it.
You don't need to see everything in one trip. Choose the experiences that matter to you, allow extra time to get around and leave a little space for discovering somewhere unexpected.
