Malibu is one of those places that can make you fall in love with Southern California, but getting the most out of it takes a little planning.

Stretching along the Pacific Coast Highway, this coastal city has beautiful beaches, oceanfront restaurants, surf spots and scenic drives that feel a world away from the bustle of Los Angeles.

The trick is knowing where to stop, where to park and how to avoid spending your entire visit stuck in traffic.

Here is how to do Malibu properly, whether you are visiting for the first time or looking to make more of your next beach day.

Plan your Malibu trip around the Pacific Coast Highway

The first thing to understand is that Malibu is long and spread out. You cannot easily hop between every beach, restaurant and viewpoint in a few minutes, especially when Pacific Coast Highway is busy.

Rather than picking places at random, plan your day around one stretch of the coast. If you want a relaxed first visit, focus on Malibu Pier, Surfrider Beach and the shops and restaurants around Malibu Country Mart.

If dramatic coastal scenery is your priority, continue farther west towards Point Dume and the beaches around El Matador.

Weekends and sunny afternoons can bring heavy traffic, so leave earlier than you think you need to. Check traffic conditions before setting off, particularly if you are driving through Pacific Palisades, where roadwork and recovery-related restrictions have affected the route.

Where to park in Malibu without the stress

Parking is one of the biggest things to get right. Some beaches have their own lots, but spaces can be limited, particularly on weekends and during warm weather.

For Malibu Pier and Surfrider Beach, look for the designated public parking areas along Pacific Coast Highway. Malibu Lagoon State Beach also has paid parking, with California State Parks listing standard vehicle day-use parking at $12, although rates can change.

If you are heading to El Matador State Beach, arrive early. Its parking area is relatively small, and the beach itself is reached via a path and stairs down from the bluff. There is little point arriving in the middle of a busy summer afternoon and expecting to find an easy space.

Another useful stop is Malibu Country Mart, where the shopping center advertises free parking. It is a convenient place to grab lunch, browse the stores or pick up a coffee without immediately having to hunt for another space.

Always use designated parking areas, check the signs and avoid leaving your car on residential streets where parking is restricted.

Choose the right Malibu beach for your day

Not every Malibu beach offers the same experience, so choosing the right one can make a big difference.

Surfrider Beach for classic California surf culture

Surfrider Beach, beside Malibu Pier, is the place to go for the familiar image of Malibu: surfers, rolling waves and views along the coastline.

It is easy to combine with a walk around the pier and lunch nearby, making it a good option if you want to experience Malibu without spending the whole day driving.

El Matador for dramatic coastal scenery

El Matador is known for its rocky formations, sea caves and photogenic stretches of sand. It is a particularly appealing stop for photography, although the access involves stairs and the beach can feel very different at high tide.

Check conditions before visiting and be prepared for a walk down from the parking area.

Point Dume for sweeping ocean views

Point Dume offers a different perspective, with coastal bluffs and panoramic views across the Pacific. On a clear day, it is a wonderful place for a scenic walk and photographs.

Parking at the bluff-top area is limited, so do not rely on finding a space there at peak times. Westward Beach is another nearby option, with paid parking.

Before choosing any beach, check current access restrictions and ocean-water quality advisories. Some coastal access points have remained closed following fire damage and coastal erosion, so an old social media post is not always a reliable guide to what is accessible today.

    Where to eat in Malibu

Malibu is a great place to make lunch part of the experience rather than simply stopping wherever you happen to be hungry.

Malibu Farm for lunch with ocean views

Located at Malibu Pier, Malibu Farm serves farm-to-table food in a setting that makes the ocean part of the occasion. It is a good choice for a sit-down meal after walking around Surfrider Beach.

The restaurant has indoor and outdoor dining, so it is worth checking availability if you want a table overlooking the water.

Paradise Cove Beach Cafe for a meal on the sand

If you want the classic Southern California beach-dining experience, Paradise Cove Beach Cafe is worth considering. The restaurant sits beside the beach farther west along the coast, offering a chance to combine lunch with time by the water.

It is a destination in its own right, so check the menu, parking arrangements and any beach-access charges before you go.

Malibu Country Mart for a more casual stop

For coffee, a quick bite or a more varied choice of restaurants, Malibu Country Mart is a convenient alternative to dining directly on the coast.

The center has several cafes and restaurants, plus shops if you fancy a wander after eating. It is particularly handy if you want to break up the drive without committing to a long restaurant lunch.

Do not spend the whole day chasing famous spots

It is tempting to pack in as many beaches and restaurants as possible, but Malibu is best enjoyed at a slower pace.

Choose one or two beaches, allow time for lunch and leave room for spontaneous stops when you find a beautiful stretch of coastline. If you want to explore the shops, do that before heading farther west rather than doubling back along the highway.

And remember that beach access is not the same as access to the surrounding private properties. Malibu has plenty of public coastal areas, but private driveways and residential neighborhoods are not sightseeing attractions.
